HOW WE WORK Curious About the Speech Writing Process?
Here's how I prefer to do it. Where necessary, I make changes to accommodate client needs.
Interview - If possible, I prefer to have an interview with the speaker (via phone or Skype) to determine the topic, main points and sub-points he wants to make in his speech. This will give me a good idea of his personality, vocal strengths, and pattern of speech. I also request information about the speaker and any speeches he has delivered in the past.
Analysis of the audience and occasion - A thorough analysis helps to determine what types of illustrations and examples will be most effective. I gather as much information as I can so that the audience members feel the speaker really knows them.
Supporting Material - Once the topic and purpose of the speech have been determined, I research supporting material (stories, statistics, examples, etc . . .) that will help clarify and enhance the points the speaker wants to make.
First draft - Using all the information I’ve gathered, I write the speech and send it to the speaker for him to review.
Feedback - This is the speaker’s opportunity to read through the speech and feel it out. Better yet, present it to some trusted colleagues to get their response to it.
Revisions - If revisions are necessary, I review comments and make changes where appropriate. In the end, the speaker has the final say. After all, I won't be giving the speech, so the speaker has to feel 100% comfortable that he can deliver it with confidence and conviction.
