What steps are involved
when using a speechwriter?

Here’s what you can expect when you use John Watkis to write your speech:

Analysis of the audience and occasion - Before John focuses on capturing the voice of the speaker, he focuses on capturing the ears, minds and hearts of the audience. A thorough analysis helps to determine what types of illustrations and examples will be most effective.

Phone Interview - If possible, John prefers to have an interview (about an hour in length) with you to determine the topic, main points and sub-points you want to make in your speech. This will give him a good idea of your personality, vocal strengths, and pattern of speech. John will also request information about you and any speeches you have delivered in the past.

Supporting Material - Once the topic and purpose of the speech have been determined, John researches supporting material (stories, statistics, examples, etc . . .) that will help clarify and enhance the points you want to make.

First draft - Using all the information he’s gathered, John writes the speech and forwards it to you for review.

Your feedback - This is your opportunity to read through the speech and feel it out. Better yet, present it to some members of your team to get their response to it.

Final draft - If you  feel revisions are necessary, John reviews your comments and makes changes where appropriate. In the end, you have the final say.  After all, John won't be giving the speech, so you have to feel 100% comfortable that you can deliver it with confidence and conviction.
