Out with the Old: George Bush’s Final Speech

by John Watkis on January 20, 2009

It took me a while to come up with the words to summarize George Bush’s final speech. While watching it, I was incredibly underwhelmed. For a moment, I was actually speechless.

Had I simply walked into an auditorium and listened to this speech, I would never have believed the person speaking was the leader of the most powerful nation in the free world. He came across as weak, worn out and pitiful.

The speech wasn’t “bad”, but it wasn’t good either. It certainly wasn’t what you would expect from a leader.

There were brief moments when he spoke with passion. Those were the moments when he spoke about others. But those passionate moments were minimal. Bush didn’t make any of his memorable screw ups, but he didn’t say anything worth remembering.

Maybe that’s the way he wanted it. Maybe his only goal was to leave without saying one more thing that would make America wonder how they ever chose him to speak on their behalf.

Besides his odd facial expressions and sad demeanor, what I’ll remember most from Bush’s speech are the words:

“There are things I would do differently if given the chance.”

If you’re ever given the chance to say some final words, don’t do it like George W. Bush.
