My Challenge to Professional Communicators

by John Watkis on January 24, 2012

I have a challenge for my colleagues who proudly use the title “Professional Communicator” to describe their occupation.

Tonight, as you’re watching the State of the Union address, put your personal and political feelings aside and do a professional critique. Can you do that?

I’m issuing this challenge because I’m tired of reading the bull shism (on both sides of the debate) when I’m looking for a breakdown of solid techniques, phrasing, tactics and rhetorical devices.

If you don’t like the ideas that are expressed … fine. But can you be professional enough to discuss the methods used to get the ideas across? If you can’t, post your “stuff” to a political forum, but don’t pass it off as a professional critique. You rob your readers of a chance to learn when you pull that crap.

Rant done. I hope you found my approach to be professional.

John, I hope that YOU are going to be doing the same! I certainly respect your opinion as a professional.

Thanks, Sue :-)

Yes, I will be offering my professional opinion after I’ve taken it all in. I’m looking forward to it.

I won’t catch it live, but I will probably see the highlights Wednesday on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show. I can’t watch US political speeches without laughing or I cry. State of the Union is usually pretty dry, but I would love to see Obama back in fine oratorical form.

I agree, Barb. The State of the Union address isn’t the most exciting event to watch, so I’m interested to see how well Obama pulls it together. I’ve read a bit of the preview of the speech, but I’m trying not to spoil it for later.
