Hi Barb,

I have to agree that he's in good "speaking" form right now. I prefer the enthusiasm and looseness he showed in his 2004 speech at the Democratic convention, but he did pretty well at shirking the "presidential" style he's been demonstrating as of late.

From the standpoint of speaking, I think Gingrich is more effective than Romney. The debates should be interesting!

Hi Donna,

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I think everyone thought "pickup truck" with that "built to last" line. It's definitely a sticky image.

I don't think the ending was bad. I just thought it wasn't neat. That's me being a stickler about bringing a speech full circle. But it worked for you. And I'm sure it worked for millions of others who watched and listened.

Good point on the Apple/outsourcing scenario. I don't suppose he could have left either subject off the plate, so maybe he just tried to smush them together and hope no one noticed.

Hi Bert,

Thanks for reading and commenting!

I did notice Obama's "cadence" as he spoke, but that seems to be his signature. He wasn't perfect, but better than usual in that regard.

Good to hear from you!

Good to see him back in oratorical form. His speeches will live on, as Kennedy's did. Now we'll have to see how he adapts to Romney robot or Gingrich grinch. Either way, I don't think that's his last State of the Union.

Good analysis, John. I agree with many of your points. It was a highly political speech, with clear language. I liked the way he challenged Congress by speaking directly to the American people. I didn't care for the "built to last" phrase, which he said at least four times. Reminds me of a rusty pickup truck. I was also puzzled by his shout-out to Apple/Jobs, while criticizing offshoring. Over the last few weeks, Apple has been pilloried for its offshoring.

Overall, I think the President was on his game. His delivery was clear and strong, except for the milk joke.

I loved the ending. It actually brought tears to my eyes.

Hi John,
Surprise, I agree with your review. I might have added a few things of course, like intonation and teleprompter eyes, but good job.

I agree, Barb. The State of the Union address isn't the most exciting event to watch, so I'm interested to see how well Obama pulls it together. I've read a bit of the preview of the speech, but I'm trying not to spoil it for later.

I won't catch it live, but I will probably see the highlights Wednesday on Jon Stewart's Daily Show. I can't watch US political speeches without laughing or I cry. State of the Union is usually pretty dry, but I would love to see Obama back in fine oratorical form.
